Phase 2 of the Marval Cinematic Universe has begun! Iron Man 3 signals the start of the second Phase of the MCU that is made of Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Solider, and Guardians of The Galaxy.
Its funny, but here is a little bit of advice for any super hero, probably not to broadcast to the villains and terrorists your home address, Tony does, and boy do they mess his life up.
I know its funny because Tony Stark has never been one to boast, he protects his secret identity so carefully… Its not like he came out in public and said “I Am Iron Man” or anything. I’m surprised he was beating his chest like a gorilla saying “Come on!”
But I digress, wow, its something to see in the trailer but its another thing to see how his house was destroyed, it really struck how much was destroyed included the beloved robot hand that was always called dummy, RIP buddy, RIP.
Iron Man 3 was loosely based on the Iron Man Extremis novel, which i’m currently reading on my kindle on the way to work in the morning and recommend. But the film presents Extremis as a way to tap into our brain and update the neurons of our central nervous system to make us our best, as well as a way to grow back missing limbs, something that was mentioned and show in the film but probably could’ve been stressed just a little more to make sense of why the Vice President would betray the president over his daughters disability.
The reveal, the big reveal that The Mandarin was an actor and Aldrich Killian was the true mastermind the whole time. I actually didn’t hate this but i did have some questions that I wondered. Some background, the Mandarin was one of the main enemies for Iron Man and was given power by his 10 magic rings, in Iron Man 1 the 10 Rings have become a Terrorist Cell during the war, which was a cool angle so I was excited when the Mandarin would be in the 3rd one. But in this one the reveal that he was nothing but a drunk actor did make me wonder if the 10 Rings had been controlled by Killian the whole time, or maybe he just used the 10 Rings in this imagery of the Mandarin he wanted to present. That being said i didn’t mind this reveal because it did seem to work and added a little more humor, which is something Marvel movies always had. Rhodey even had a line about how Thor had caused some of the other people to step up their game in the theatricality department, thus the representation of the Mandarin. But really, I dont think Marvel should be thinking that this universe its created shouldn’t have a real villain like the mandarin presented here because its “too much”, this is the same films who plan on having one of their film with a walking talking Raccoon with a gun, and for those that think this is a joke here is concept art for Guardians oftheGalaxy
No a portrayal of the mandarin clearly would be too much so instead here is Rocket Raccoon. -Marvel
Regardless i didn’t mind the reveal Aldrich Killian was an interesting villan overall.
The part that really unfortunately left a bad taste in my mouth was the ending. Tony has surgery to remove the shrapnel near his heart and removes his arc reactor to instead toss it in the ocean.
The same arc reactor that he literally had to spend all of his energy to make an entirely new element to help keep him alive. Nope, just toss it in the ocean.
And with that Tony seems to walk away from it all.
The movie seemed to prove that anyone can use the suit, pepper, Rhodey, Killian, the president, but no one can be Tony Stark which is cool, but to say the suit was just a cocoon? I’m not too sure about that.
I wonder why the chose to end it this way. Most likely Marvel knows that these films print money and by making Tony walk away from it just means he’ll be back and in demand more when Avengers 2 hits. Or maybe Robert Downey Jr is getting ready to walk away from the role. I’m not sure
Don’t get me wrong though this was a really cool movie watching the suits all get to have their time to shine was awesome!
Sadly the final scene after the credits was really just Tony talking about what happened to Dr. Banner. Pretty ok though.
